USA Cycling's women gear up for Tour of New Zealand

There's a lot going on domestically and abroad as race season gears up. USA Cycling Women's National Development Team is looking strong headed into the NZCT Women's Cycle Tour of New Zealand this week. USA Cycling's women's development efforts are also in full force this week on the BMX Track with a Women's Olympic Development Squad (WODS) Camp taking place in Chula Vista. Last week, USA Cycling National Development Program alum Tejay Van Garderen (Fort Collins, Colo./Team HTC-Columbia) made quite the Pro Tour debut in Portugal.

The USA Cycling Women’s National Team is looking solid headed into the 2010 NZCT Women’s Cycle Tour of New Zealand which is set to begin this week in the town of Martinborough.  Amber Neben (Irvine, Calif.), 2008 world champion in the time trial, will lead the strong American contingent that is also comprised of Janel Holcomb (San Diego, Calif.), Shelley Evans (Scotts Valley, Calif./Peanut Butter & Co. Twenty 12), Andrea Dvorrak (Crozet, Va.), Jessica Phillips (Aspen, Colo./Colavita-Baca), and Alison Starnes (Mill Valley, Calif./TIBCO).

Former USA Cycling National Development Program rider Tejay Van Garderen (Fort Collins, Colo./Team HTC-Columbia) rode to ninth-place overall in the final classification of Portugal's Volta ao Algarve, February 17-21. His strong finish in his Pro Tour debut came after a fifth-place effort in stage three of the UCI 2.1 event.

USA Cycling is hosting a BMX Women's Olympic Development Squad (WODS) Camp at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, February 23 to March 4. The following eight women have been invited to the camp: Arielle Martin (Spanaway, Wash.), Alise Post (Saint Cloud, Minn.), Brooke Crain (Visalia, Calif.), Amanda Geving (Largo, Fla.), Taylor Wolcott (Roseville, Calif.), Ashley Verhagen (Simi Valley, Calif.), Amanda Carr (Punta Gorda, Fla.), and Dominique Daniels (Gilbert, Ariz.)
