DEVELOPMENT WRAP-UP: Stetina rides to second in stage four of Tour de L'Avenir
USA Cycling's Development Programs yielded four top-five finishes abroad over the weekend. Ryan Eastman (Petaluma, Calif./All Sport-Team Swift) and Anders Newbury (Fairfield, Vt./Hot Tubes) scored second- and third-place finishes in a junior race in Belgium while U23 rider Peter Stetina (Boulder, Colo./Garmin-Felt-Holowesko) rode to second place in stage four of the Tour de L'Avenir. On the women's side, Amber Neben (Irvine, Calif./ Equipe Nürnberger) made the second place effort in Italy's Memorial Davide Fardelli
JUNIOR Development PrOGRAM
On Saturday, the USA Cycling Junior Development Team fielded the following six riders for a 90-kilometer kermess in Kooigem, Belgium: Ryan Eastman, Anders Newbury, Juan Carmona (Breinigsville, Pa.), Colt Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif.), Zack Noonan (Kutztown, Pa.), and Jake Arnold (Cary, N.C.) Eastman and Carmona posted the top results for the team, 11th- and 12th-place after contesting a bunch sprint at the finish line.
On Sunday, the same six riders toed the line for a 59.5-kilometer criterium in Bavakhove. After breaking away with eventual winner Van Keirsbulck after about ten kilometers, Ryan Eastman and Anders Newbury crossed the finish line in second and third respectively. The rest of the American squad finished in the main bunch.
NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT TEAM PROGRAM
Riding for the USA Cycling National Development Team, Peter Stetina placed second in stage four of the Tour de L’Avenir on Tuesday, moving him to seventh-place in the overall classification. Six riders are contesting the French stage race as members of the National Development Team: Stetina, Christopher Barton (Ojai, Calif.) Kirk Carlsen (Boulder, Colo./Garmin-Felt-Holowesko), Daniel Holloway (Morgan Hill, Calif.), Alex Howes (Boulder, Colo./Garmin-Felt-Holowekso), and Tejay Van Garderen (Superior, Colo./Rabobank Continental Team). WOMEN'S DEVELOPMENT TEAM PROGRAM
Riding for the U.S. National Team, Amber Neben and Jessica Phillips (Aspen, Colo./Team Lip Smackers) contested the Memorial Davide Fardelli in Italy on Sunday. Neben rode to the second-place finish, 22 seconds behind race winner Karin Thürig (SWI). Phillips finished in sixth-place. Click here for the event website.
DEVELOPMENT CAMPS
USA Cycling is currently hosting a Madison Track Camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The camp ends on September 13.
COMING UP...
Six women will represent the U.S. National Team at the Tour Cycliste Feminin International Ardeche which begins today and runs through September 12. Those riders are Amber Neben, Jessica Phillips, Meredith Miller (Fort Collins, Colo./Team TIBCO), Kristin McGrath (Durango, Colo./Valueact Capital), Evelyn Stevens (New York, N.Y./Team Lip Smacker), and Shelley Olds (Scotts Valley, Calif./Proman). The USA Cycling Junior Development Team will continue racing in Belgium next weekend, contesting the Curitas Classic on Saturday and the Vlaams Brabant on Sunday.
The USA Cycling National Development Team will continue the Tour de L'Avenir, racing stages five through nine. The event ends on Sunday.
