Junior Track Worlds wrap up in Moscow; Rivera 6th in womens omnium

Moscow, Russia (August 15, 2009)-- The 2009 UCI Junior Track World Championships wrapped up in Moscow on Saturday, with the top result for the American contingent being the sixth-place effort put forth by Coryn Rivera (Tustin, Calif./Proman Hit Squad) in the women’s omni

The final event that factored into the women’s omnium was contested on Friday. After competing in the 200-meter sprint, scratch race, individual pursuit, points race, and one-kilometer time trial, Rivera placed sixth with 30 points. Aussie Megan Dunn claimed the world title with seven points on Friday.

The next best result for Team USA also occurred on Friday. After placing second in their qualifying heat, Dan Heeley (Los Angeles, Calif./South Bay Wheelmen) and Kit Karzen (Beverly Hills, Calif./NOW-MS Society) placed eighth in the final of the men’s Madison. The pair was fourth in the contest’s first sprint, giving them a total of one point compared to the twelve taken by the winning Australian duo of Alex Carver and Luke Durbridge.

Ian Moir (Long Beach, Calif./Rock Racing) also represented the U.S. in Moscow, riding to an impressive ninth-place ranking in the men’s omnium on Saturday. The men’s omnium consisted of the same events as the women’s. Moir amassed a total of 46 points over the course of the week for his ninth-place finish while Frenchman Bryan Coquard collected 21 points to slip into the rainbow jersey.

In addition to his strong placing in the omnium, Moir placed 29th in the men’s individual pursuit on Wednesday. In other American action on the track in Moscow, Heeley contested the men’s points race during opening day on Tuesday. He placed second in the fifth sprint to earn three points and a 19th-place final ranking. Denmark’s Sebastian Lander won the event with twelve points. Karzen represented the U.S. in the scratch race on Wednesday, placing 29th overall while Rivera rode to a 23rd-place ranking in the women’s individual pursuit after clocking a time of two minutes and 36.859 seconds compared to the two minutes and 26.28 seconds clocked by first-place finisher Michaela Anderson (AUS).
