USA Cycling names squad for Junior Road and Track Worlds
Colorado Springs, Colo. (July 17, 2009) – Following the conclusion of the Tour of the Red River Gorge Invitational, the first-ever U.S.-based junior UCI event, USA Cycling announced the U.S. roster for the 2009 UCI Junior Road and Track World Championships slated for Moscow, August 11-15.
The four-day elite junior race came to a close in Lexington, Ky. on Friday with Nathan Brown (Covington, Tenn./Hot Tubes) winning the overall classification. Riding to three second-place finishes over the five stages, Brown took the win ahead of Ian Boswell (Bend, Ore./Hot Tubes), Anders Newbury (Fairfield, Vt./Hot Tubes), and Lawson Craddock (Houston, Texas/Hot Tubes).
Along with the overall prize at the Tour of the Red River Gorge Invitational, Brown received a nomination to represent the U.S. in both the road race and time trial at the Junior Road and Track World Championships later this summer. He secured his start spots with wins at the UCI 2.1 Tour du Pays de Vaud and the Edgar Soto Classic Junior Worlds Trials road race, as well as with his fifth-place effort in the UCI 2.NC Trofeo Karlsberg.
Craddock, who won the Tour of the Red River Gorge stage three time trial, will join Brown in both the time trial and road race in Moscow. The 17-year-old earned automatic nominations by virtue of his time trial win at the Edgar Soto Classics Junior Worlds Trials and his fourth-place effort at the Trofeo Karlsberg.
Rounding out the six-man roster for the men’s road race will be Red River Gorge stage four winner Jacob Rathe (Portland, Ore./CMG Racing), second-place overall finisher Ian Boswell, Gavin Mannion (Dedham, Mass./Hot Tubs), and Ryan Eastman (Petaluma, Calif./All Sport-Team Swift).
Representing the U.S. in the women’s time trial and road race will be Coryn Rivera (Tustin, Calif./Proman Hit Squad), who earned a nomination with her time trial victory at the Edgar Soto Classic Junior Worlds Trials. Jessica Prinner (South Elgin, Ill./ABD Cycling Team) will join Rivera in both the time trial and the road race while Kendall Ryan (Ventura, Calif./NOW-MS Society) scored a nomination to the road race squad with her win in the Edgar Soto Classic Junior Worlds Trials road race.
In addition to her spot on the women’s road race and time trial roster, Rivera is the only female nominated to the track squad. She will ride for Team USA in the women’s two-kilometer pursuit, points race, and omnium.
For the men’s track events, Kit Karzen (Beverly Hills, Calif./NOW-MS Society), Dan Heeley (Los Angeles, Calif./South Bay Wheelmen), and Ian Moir (Long Beach, Calif./Rock Racing) will comprise the U.S. contingent. Karzen will contest the scratch race while Heeley will compete in the points race, and the two will later team up to race the Madison. Moir is scheduled to compete in the omnium and three-kilometer pursuit.
